Mysterious Traveller
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Mysterious Traveller · For Weather Report's fourth album, founder Miroslav Vitouš left because of creative differences. Alphonso Johnson came in on bass, and Ishmael Wilburn became the new drummer. The album was released in 1974.
It is the first record by the group to use mainly electric bass, with funk, R&B grooves and rock that later became the trademark. The composition became tighter, in place of the open improvisation of the first three albums. The readers of DownBeat chose it as album of the year for 1974, and the magazine gave it five stars. The Penguin Guide included it in its core collection of essential recordings. On the Billboard Jazz Albums chart it reached number 2.
