Broadway & 52nd
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Broadway & 52nd · After the enormous success of the debut Hand on the Torch, Us3 was given a free hand at Blue Note Records. The label's president had the group dig deep into the label's vault and make whatever they wanted there. The second album was released in 1996, and the title refers to an intersection in New York's theatre district, where bebop once had its centre.
The group continued to combine live musicians, samples and hip-hop lyrics. The album sounds darker and more conscious than the debut. Titles such as Caught Up in a Struggle and Doin' a Crime already show this. It was received less well than its predecessor, but it is regarded as a more mature form of jazz rap.
