Pop

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Pop is U2's ninth studio album and was released on 3 March 1997. The recording began in 1995 with producers such as Nellee Hooper, Flood, Howie B and Steve Osborne, who wanted to introduce the band to electronic music and club culture. Drummer Larry Mullen Jr. had a back injury and was unable to play for a while, which forced the others to write their songs in a different way.

The album works with samples, loops, drum machines and sequencers, and builds on the experiments of Achtung Baby and Zooropa. The first single, Discothèque, was strongly electronic. Because the tour had already been booked, time pressure arose and the songs were worked on until the last moment. The band themselves felt the result was unfinished. Pop first received favourable reviews, but in retrospect many regard it as a disappointment.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Discothèque and notice how loops and dance rhythms play a major role alongside the guitar. Hear what still sounds recognisably like a rock band.
