A Quick One
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
A Quick One is the second album by The Who and was released on 9 December 1966. It departs from the emphasis on R&B on the debut My Generation. A deal with a publisher gave each band member an advance of 500 pounds for writing two songs. As a result not only Pete Townshend but also John Entwistle, Keith Moon and Roger Daltrey contributed to the writing, and this is the album on which Townshend dominates least. Kit Lambert produced it in London in the autumn of 1966.
The opening track Run Run Run is a stomping hard rocker with a guitar solo full of feedback. Boris the Spider by Entwistle became his best-known song. Cobwebs and Strange was played by the band members on wind instruments. The album closes with A Quick One, While He's Away, a nine-minute suite in six parts about infidelity and forgiveness. It formed the first step towards the later rock operas Tommy and Quadrophenia.
