Kiss Land
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Kiss Land was the first studio album by the Canadian singer The Weeknd and was released in September 2013 on XO and Republic Records. Before that he had made a name for himself with three mixtapes. The album is about life on tour, a world that he built in his head. He drew inspiration from filmmakers such as John Carpenter, David Cronenberg and Ridley Scott, who know how to put fear on screen. The album was meant to feel like a horror film. The production was handled mainly by DannyBoyStyles, the singer himself and DaHeala.
The music revolves around his soft falsetto voice, dark synthesizers, guitars in an 80s vein and menacing drum patterns. Live For is the only track with a guest, Drake. The reviews were mostly positive, although some critics felt it resembled the mixtapes too much. The album entered at number two on the Billboard 200. Entertainment Weekly ranked it fifth in its list of the best albums of 2013.
