Beauty Behind the Madness

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Beauty Behind the Madness, the second studio album by the Canadian singer The Weeknd, was released in August 2015. His first album Kiss Land had been well received, but he considered it a commercial disappointment. A collaboration with Ariana Grande and producer Max Martin, Love Me Harder, became his first top ten hit. That showed him that he could make pop music in his own way. With Martin and others he wrote, among other songs, In the Night and Can't Feel My Face.

The record shifts from dark alternative R&B to a sound that is more pop, with influences of disco, funk and soul. Critics heard the influence of Michael Jackson in it. Guests are Labrinth, Ed Sheeran and Lana Del Rey. The Hills and Can't Feel My Face reached first place on the Billboard Hot 100. The album was his first number one in the United States and won a Grammy for Best Urban Contemporary Album.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Can't Feel My Face and notice the danceable, disco-tinged bass line, which almost recalls Michael Jackson, while the lyrics are darker than the music suggests.
