Gish
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Gish is the debut by the Smashing Pumpkins, recorded from December 1990 to March 1991 at Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin. Butch Vig and Billy Corgan produced it together, on a budget of 20,000 dollars. For Vig, then a little-known producer, having so much time to work on a guitar sound or on harmonies was new. Corgan played almost all the guitar and bass himself. The sessions were a heavy strain on the group.
The music seeks a balance between heavy riffs, as with Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, and the sensitivity of British bands such as The Cure. Rhinoceros shows this well: first psychedelic and beautiful, then suddenly heavy with a sharp lead guitar. Corgan called it an album about pain and spiritual growth. The name comes from the silent film star Lillian Gish. The reactions were very positive, and the album later became one of the best-selling independent records of its time.
