Too Much Pressure
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Too Much Pressure · After the hit single On My Radio, The Selecter, from Coventry, recorded their debut album from December 1979 to January 1980 over two months at Horizon Studios, with producer Errol Ross. Rico Rodriguez and Dick Cuthell of The Specials played the horns. The album is largely a studio version of what the live audience of the time heard: mostly original songs by Neol Davies, supplemented with covers of old ska and reggae.
The music is tense and sharp, a mixture of punk, ska and reggae with raw vocals and politically aware lyrics. Singer Pauline Black stands out for her voice. The record was released on 15 February 1980 on 2 Tone Records and reached number 5 in the British album chart. Later it went gold. The first single, Three Minute Hero, did moderately; Missing Words reached number 23. In the United States, On My Radio was added as the first track.
