Out of Our Heads

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Out of Our Heads was released in 1965 in two versions with a different cover and different tracks: first in July in the United States, in September in Great Britain. Manager Andrew Loog Oldham produced it. As on the two previous albums, most of it consists of covers of American blues, soul and rhythm and blues, including songs by Marvin Gaye, Solomon Burke and Sam Cooke. In addition there are original songs, six on the American version.

That version also contains The Last Time, Play With Fire and (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction, rock songs that brought the band's roots into a more modern, guitar-driven sound. Satisfaction became their first number one in the United States, and the album also became their first number one on the American album chart. In Great Britain it reached second place. It was the group's last British album to lean on R&B covers: the next one, Aftermath, consisted entirely of original work by Jagger and Richards.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Play With Fire: notice the harpsichord and the acoustic guitar that you hear alongside the vocals. This makes it sound different from the rock guitars of the other original songs.
