Freak Out!
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Freak Out! · The Mothers of Invention were originally a bar band, the Soul Giants, who played rhythm and blues covers. After Frank Zappa joined the group, his own work came to the fore and the name changed. In early 1966 producer Tom Wilson offered them a contract with Verve, under the impression that they were a white blues band. When he heard Who Are the Brain Police? he realised that this was not so, and Zappa was given an almost unlimited budget.
The record was released on 27 June 1966 as a double album and is regarded as one of the first concept albums in rock: a satire on American pop culture and on the emerging freak scene in Los Angeles. The music ranges from rhythm and blues, doo-wop and blues rock to orchestral arrangements and avant-garde sound collages. In the United States the album initially received a lukewarm reception; in Europe it was a success. Later it acquired cult status and, in 1999, a Grammy Hall of Fame Award.
