On the Threshold of a Dream

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

On the Threshold of a Dream is the fourth album by the Moody Blues and was released in April 1969 on Deram. It was recorded in January 1969, straight after the first tour of North America, nine months after In Search of the Lost Chord. It was the group's first number 1 in the United Kingdom. It is a concept album with a looser theme than the earlier records. The title, devised by Mike Pinder, refers to the flower-power hope that society stood on the threshold of a new consciousness.

Each band member contributed ideas to that theme. Together they worked out the songs, says John Lodge. The record opens with a spoken introduction by drummer Graeme Edge, inspired by Descartes's cogito, ergo sum. Justin Hayward called the album the group's defining work.
