ABC

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

This second album by the Jackson 5 was released on 8 May 1970 on Motown, less than six months after their debut. It contains the number 1 singles ABC and The Love You Save, and the album reached the top four of the American pop albums and number one on the R&B albums chart. The musicians who played the songs were not credited at the time, because Motown only began naming session musicians from 1971.

Besides the hits there are striking album tracks: a cover of Funkadelic's I'll Bet You, the song The Young Folks, previously recorded by Diana Ross and the Supremes, and I Found That Girl, the only song with Jermaine as lead singer. AllMusic called it perhaps the brothers' strongest album of the early 1970s. The title song was nominated for a Grammy Award. The album is regarded as one of the group's most popular records.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to ABC and notice how the young lead singer and his brothers' harmonies make the song so playful and tight.
