Diana Ross Presents the Jackson 5

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Diana Ross Presents the Jackson 5 · This debut album was released on 12 December 1969 on Motown. The title made it sound as if Diana Ross had discovered the group, and she even wrote the text on the back. That was a marketing plan by the label. In reality producer Bobby Taylor had found the brothers, and Gladys Knight too said that she had brought them to Motown's attention. Ross, however, gladly took on the role and helped to promote the group.

Recording ran from May to August 1969. The record consists of twelve songs, with the still very young Michael Jackson as lead singer alongside his brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine and Marlon. It is tight harmony singing with a lot of youthful energy and a funky undertone, as AllMusic described it. The only single, I Want You Back, was at number 1 on the American Hot 100 within a few weeks. Critics were very positive and saw in the album the beginning of a new era in crossover pop and soul.

Listening tip. Listen to I Want You Back and notice how Michael takes the lead while his brothers follow him with short, tight voices.
