Disintegration
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Disintegration · The album was released on 2 May 1989 and was The Cure's eighth. The band recorded it at Hook End in Oxfordshire, with co-producer David M. Allen. Singer Robert Smith was about to turn thirty and felt the pressure to make a more lasting work after the pop successes. He wanted to return to the sombre mood of the early 1980s, and the aftermath of the drugs he took can be heard in the sound. After the mixing sessions Smith threw the founder Lol Tolhurst out of the band.
The record company Elektra found the result deliberately incomprehensible, but Disintegration became the band's best-performing album up to that point. Lovesong reached number two on the American chart. The first reviews were warm, and later the album grew into a widely praised work. Since 2020 it has stood at number 116 in Rolling Stone's list of the five hundred best albums.
