Exit Planet Dust

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Exit Planet Dust was the British duo's debut, released in 1995. Recording ran from August to November 1994. Before that, Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons had already been DJing and making remixes, under the name Dust Brothers. An American production duo of the same name threatened legal action, and so it became The Chemical Brothers. The album title refers to that change of name. The first six tracks run into one another like a medley. They include Leave Home, Chemical Beats and Song to the Siren, which was recorded live in a London club.

The sound is big and bombastic, with screaming guitar samples and sirens. Leave Home and Life Is Sweet became singles. The press was enthusiastic: NME praised the raw, rule-breaking music, and AllMusic called it one of the few European post-techno records to gain a foothold in the United States. The album was later included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
