Younger Than Yesterday

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Younger Than Yesterday was released on 6 February 1967 on Columbia Records and was the Byrds' fourth album. Gene Clark was gone, the group's popularity was declining, and with new producer Gary Usher the album was recorded in eleven days at Columbia Studios in Hollywood. The group experimented with horns, reversed tape effects and an electronic oscillator.

Bassist Chris Hillman came to the fore for the first time as a singer and writer, and two of his songs point ahead to country rock. The album opens with So You Want to Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star, a mocking song with a trumpet solo by Hugh Masekela and the sound of screaming fans. C.T.A.-102 speculates about extraterrestrial life. At the time the album was largely ignored, but critical appreciation grew, and today it is regarded as one of the group's best.
