Sweetheart of the Rodeo

Sweetheart of the Rodeo was released in August 1968 on Columbia Records. Roger McGuinn first wanted to make a double album about the history of American popular music, but the young Gram Parsons, who joined the band in February 1968, persuaded him and Chris Hillman to make a pure country record. The recording was divided between Nashville and Los Angeles, with session musicians such as Lloyd Green, John Hartford and Clarence White. By the time the album came out, Parsons had already left the group again.

The repertoire includes two Dylan songs from his Basement Tapes, You Ain't Goin' Nowhere and Nothing Was Delivered, alongside classic country songs such as I Am a Pilgrim. Parsons brought Hickory Wind. In Nashville the group was booed as hippies at the Grand Ole Opry. Commercially it was their least successful album up to that point, but today it is regarded as an influential country rock record.
