Byrdmaniax
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Byrdmaniax was released in June 1971 on Columbia, as the tenth album by the Byrds. The group had just had success with Ballad of Easy Rider and (Untitled) and was touring without a break. Recording began in October 1970 under producer Terry Melcher, but the new songs were still barely worked out.
The album includes Pale Blue, a quiet acoustic ballad by Roger McGuinn and Gene Parsons, and I Trust, a gospel-like song. There are also light-hearted pieces, such as I Wanna Grow Up to Be a Politician, a ragtime-like song from the never-completed musical Gene Tryp, and the bluegrass instrumental Green Apple Quick Step. While the band was on tour, Melcher had strings, horns and a gospel choir laid over the songs, reportedly without the group's permission. The record was poorly received and the band members were themselves dissatisfied with it.
