Simply Stated
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Simply Stated was Terence Blanchard's second album as a bandleader. Columbia Records released it on 5 May 1992. Blanchard described the record as a love letter to Miles Davis. It contains four well-known jazz standards and four originals. The musicians included Sam Newsome on tenor saxophone, Bruce Barth on piano and Rodney Whitaker on double bass.
The album reached the top ten of the Billboard traditional jazz chart. Nick Deriso of Something Else found the record pleasant but never truly triumphant, and named Dear Old Stockholm and When It's Sleepytime Down South as its strong points. For him it was the beginning of Blanchard's growth from young lion to modern benchmark. Scott Yanow of AllMusic found Blanchard in top form and called the record strongly connected to hard bop, yet fresh.
