Terence Blanchard

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

This was the first album on which Terence Blanchard was heard as a bandleader. Columbia Records released it on 18 June 1991. Delfeayo Marsalis produced it. Branford Marsalis and Sam Newsome played tenor saxophone, Bruce Barth piano. Before that, Blanchard had worked on the film Mo' Better Blues, as arranger, trumpeter and trumpet teacher to the actor Denzel Washington.

The album opens and closes with a hymn: Motherless Child and Amazing Grace. In between are four originals and three standards. Scott Yanow of AllMusic wrote that Blanchard was ready to become one of the great trumpeters of the 1990s. Leonard Feather praised Tomorrow's Just a Luxury and Sing Soweto as proof of a strong compositional talent, but found Wandering Wonder and Azania somewhat too exuberant.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Motherless Child, which opens the record, and notice how a hymn immediately sets the tone of the album.
