I’m Serious · In 1999 the Atlanta rapper T.I. was discovered by Kawan KP Prather, whose label Ghet-O-Vision belonged to LaFace Records. His debut album was released on 9 October 2001 on Arista Records, after LaFace had been dissolved and folded into Arista. Guests include Pharrell Williams of the Neptunes, Jazze Pha, Too Short and Lil Jon. Many songs are about his time as a drug dealer, something he was as a teenager.

The album sold modestly and reached number 98 on the Billboard 200. Reviewers were divided: some found many songs similar to each other, others praised the detailed stories. The title song, produced by the Neptunes with Beenie Man, did not make the Hot 100, but did well locally. After the disappointing figures, he proposed to Arista that they form a joint venture or let him go. The label chose the latter.
