Suzanne Vega

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Suzanne Vega is the debut album of the American singer-songwriter Suzanne Vega. It was released on 1 May 1985 on A&M Records. The recordings were largely made at Celestial Sound in New York, under Steve Addabbo and Lenny Kaye. The album departs from what was usual at the time: the arrangements are sparse and folk-like. It helped usher in a new era of singer-songwriters.

The success exceeded expectations. In the United States more than two hundred thousand copies were sold, in the United Kingdom many more. Marlene on the Wall, Small Blue Thing and Knight Moves were released as singles. Marlene on the Wall became a big hit in England only after a reissue in 1986. Rolling Stone later placed the album at number 80 among the best records of the 1980s, and a reviewer in Spin called it a strong introduction.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Marlene on the Wall to hear how the acoustic guitar and the soft, flat voice tell many stories with few means.
