Solitude Standing

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Solitude Standing is Suzanne Vega's second studio album, released in April 1987 on A&M Records. Steve Addabbo and Lenny Kaye produced it. It became her most commercially successful and most critically acclaimed album. It reached number 11 on the Billboard 200 and number 2 on the British chart, and went platinum in the United States and Britain.

The album opens with Tom's Diner a cappella and closes with an instrumental version. In 1990 a remix of the song by the producers of DNA reached number one in the United Kingdom. Night Vision comes from a poem by Paul Éluard, Calypso from the Odyssey. Rolling Stone found it less focused than the debut, but heard a singer and writer who was growing. AllMusic later called it a triumph: an album of story songs in widely varying musical settings.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Tom's Diner (A Cappella), with which the album opens, and then compare it with Tom's Diner (Reprise) at the end: what is left without a voice?
