Join the Army

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Join the Army, released in April 1987, is the second album by Suicidal Tendencies. It is one of the best-known records combining punk and thrash metal, a style known as crossover thrash, for which the band is seen as a co-inventor. The producers were Lester Claypool and the band themselves, at the Record Plant in Los Angeles. Two new members played on it: guitarist Rocky George, who pushed the sound towards thrash, and drummer R.J. Herrera, who used a double bass drum. It was also the last record with bassist Louiche Mayorga.

Singer Mike Muir used very different vocal techniques than on the debut and sometimes sounded like Lemmy of Motörhead. The single Possessed to Skate was given a music video with old skateboard tricks, which is regarded as a snapshot of skating in its day. AllMusic called the record a transitional album from hardcore punk to thrash. It reached position 100 on the Billboard 200 and drew the attention of major labels. Epic signed the band in 1988.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Possessed to Skate and notice the fast guitar work and the double bass drum, which lift the punk sound towards metal.
