Bella Donna
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Bella Donna is Stevie Nicks's first solo album. She began it in 1979, between the recording of Fleetwood Mac's Tusk, and worked on it after the tour with a full band under producer Jimmy Iovine. The record was recorded bit by bit, because session musicians such as Waddy Wachtel and Russ Kunkel had little time. Without Lindsey Buckingham, she let the musicians fill in for themselves what they heard on her demos. Friends such as Tom Petty and Don Henley sang along.
Stop Draggin' My Heart Around with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers became a hit, as did Leather and Lace with Henley, Edge of Seventeen and the country-flavoured After the Glitter Fades. The album reached number one on the American chart. Critics were divided. Rolling Stone praised the arrangements, while Record Mirror found the record too well-behaved. AllMusic later wrote that Iovine kept the sound organic.
