Pretzel Logic
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Pretzel Logic was recorded at the Village Recorder in Los Angeles under producer Gary Katz and was the group's last record as a touring band. Walter Becker and Donald Fagen wrote the songs and brought in well-known studio musicians to perform them, so that the other band members had less to do. Because new songs were hard to come by, they used three older songs and, for the only time, covered a piece by Duke Ellington.
The songs are shorter than on the previous record and fit the three-minute format, with funk in Night by Night and a shuffle in the title track. Rikki Don't Lose That Number opens with a syncopated piano line and borrows the bass part from Horace Silver's Song for My Father. Parker's Band is a tribute to Charlie Parker. The album was a success with critics and public, and Rikki became the group's biggest hit. After that, Becker and Fagen stopped touring.
