Katy Lied
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Katy Lied came out in March 1975 on ABC Records. It was the first album after Walter Becker and Donald Fagen decided to stop touring and concentrate on the studio. Guitarists Jeff Baxter and Denny Dias and drummer Jim Hodder left the group; Becker called it liberating that he could stop such difficult collaborations. From then on they worked with studio musicians. Dias stayed on as a session musician, Michael Omartian played most of the keyboards and the twenty-year-old Jeff Porcaro the drums on almost all the tracks. He struggled with Your Gold Teeth II, which changes time signature, until Fagen gave him an album by Charles Mingus. Michael McDonald made his debut here with backing vocals.
Phil Woods played his saxophone solo in Doctor Wu in one take. Black Friday reached number 37 on the American chart, but Bad Sneakers is now the best-known song. The album reached thirteenth place and went gold.
