Countdown to Ecstasy
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Countdown to Ecstasy · Steely Dan's second album was recorded between tours at Village Recorder in West Los Angeles. Singer David Palmer had left, so Donald Fagen sings all the songs. Because there was little time, songs were often made at the last minute: Fagen wrote Bodhisattva the evening before the recording. Only eight songs were recorded. In Bodhisattva he played all four parts of a saxophone-like section one by one on an ARP synthesizer. Afterwards he threw the instrument down the stairs and set it on fire.
The style is rock with a strong jazz influence. Most songs last longer than five minutes and are subtle in texture. Razor Boy rests on a reggae beat. My Old School tells of a drug raid at Bard College in 1969, in which the writers were arrested. The album was a critical success, but produced no hit in America. It reached number 35 and went gold in 1978.
