Portraits on Standards

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Portraits on Standards · In 1953 Stan Kenton and his orchestra recorded a series of jazz standards for Capitol, which first appeared on a 10-inch LP. The arrangements were written by Bill Russo. Kenton himself led the group and played piano. The orchestra included, among others, Conte Candoli, Frank Rosolino, Lee Konitz and Zoot Sims.

The album features songs such as I've Got You Under My Skin, April in Paris, How High the Moon, Crazy Rhythm and Duke Ellington's I Got It Bad. According to the reviewer Scott Yanow, most of this orchestra's recordings from the 1950s were complicated and sometimes bombastic, but the versions of standards were often sentimental and very melodic. The music alternates, in his view, between ballads and boppish outbursts from an orchestra that could swing hard.

Listening tip. Listen to April in Paris and notice how melodic Bill Russo's arrangement sounds.
