Contemporary Concepts

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Contemporary Concepts is an album of jazz standards that Stan Kenton recorded in 1955 and released on Capitol. Kenton leads the orchestra and plays piano. Bill Holman wrote the arrangements for the first six tracks, including What's New, Stella by Starlight and Cherokee, and Gerry Mulligan arranged his own Limelight.

The orchestra includes soloists such as altoists Charlie Mariano and Lennie Niehaus, tenor saxophonist Bill Perkins, trombonist Carl Fontana and trumpeters Sam Noto and Stu Williamson. Drummer Mel Lewis drives the rhythm section along. The reviewer Scott Yanow felt that the music swings well and that nothing very innovative happens, but that this accessible record is of interest to lovers of bop.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Stella By Starlight and notice how Mel Lewis's drums push the rhythm section along.
