How High the Moon

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Song

On 4 January 1951, the guitarist Les Paul and the singer Mary Ford recorded How High the Moon in their apartment in Queens. Les Paul built up layer upon layer with a tape recorder: he played all the guitars himself and Ford sang her part several times. This is called overdubbing. The record spent nine weeks at number one. From then on you could build a record in the studio, instead of just capturing a performance.

Listening

Listening tip. Hear how many more guitars and voices sound than two people could play at once. Everything is layered.
