City of Glass

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

City of Glass was released as a ten-inch LP by Stan Kenton and consists entirely of music by Bob Graettinger. Kenton had re-formed his orchestra in September 1947 to play progressive jazz for the concert hall. In December 1951 a new Innovations Orchestra was given two studio days, entirely devoted to Graettinger. The main work is the four-part suite City of Glass, a rewritten version of a composition from 1948 that had been performed only twice, in Chicago.

Incident in Jazz is regarded as Graettinger's most coherent work. Opinions on his music were divided. Trumpeter Buddy Childers called it nonsense, and Kenton himself said it was either the best music the orchestra had ever played, or the biggest mess. Graettinger died in 1957, aged 33.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Incident In Jazz for the irregular structure, without fixed symmetry, and for how the work ends quietly.
