Old, New, Borrowed and Blue

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Old, New, Borrowed and Blue · In July 1973 drummer Don Powell was seriously injured in a car accident, in which his girlfriend was killed. The band's existence was briefly at stake. Powell recovered and the group went into the studio to record their fourth album, under Chas Chandler. During the recording of My Friend Stan, Powell was still walking with a stick and had to be lifted onto his stool. Around Christmas 1973 Slade also had a number one with Merry Xmas Everybody.

On this album the band tried to break free of the usual rock formula. My Friend Stan and Everyday are songs with piano, and Find Yourself a Rainbow has a pub piano. When the Lights Are Out is the first song on which Jim Lea sings. Alongside softer songs there are also hard-driving rock numbers, such as We're Really Gonna Raise the Roof. The album was released in February 1974 and reached number one in Britain.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Everyday and notice the piano that carries the song, instead of the usual heavy guitars. Compare that with We're Really Gonna Raise the Roof, which sounds more like the Slade you know.
