Folk Roots, New Routes
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Folk Roots, New Routes is a collaboration between Shirley Collins and guitarist Davy Graham, released by Decca in 1964. Ray Horricks produced the record and Gus Dudgeon recorded it. Collins sings, Graham plays guitar. According to Bob Stanley, the duo drew inspiration from North African scales, modal music and Miles Davis. It was the first time that many of these English folk songs were recorded with guitar accompaniment.
The record is regarded as a milestone of the folk revival. An NPR reviewer called it an uncompromising work that brought innovation in the midst of that revival. It set the pattern for the folk rock that followed and, decades later, inspired psych folk. Fairport Convention's Liege and Lief from 1969 is seen as a continuation of this model.
