Solace
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Solace is Sarah McLachlan's second studio album. It was released on Nettwerk in Canada in June 1991 and on Arista in the United States in January 1992. It was the first of many albums that Pierre Marchand produced for her. It made her a star in Canada, with the hits The Path of Thorns (Terms) and Into the Fire, and went double platinum for sales of 200,000 copies.
Outside Canada the breakthrough only came with the next album, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, although the reviews were favourable internationally too. The Los Angeles Times heard in the songs a lovely echo of Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins and Sandy Denny, without it ever becoming imitation, and praised the atmospheric production. The Chicago Tribune felt that, because of the sombre tone, no single track really stood out. The Rolling Stone Album Guide called it a considerable leap in maturity and focus in 2004.
