Fumbling Towards Ecstasy

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Fumbling Towards Ecstasy was released on 22 October 1993 and is Sarah McLachlan's third album. Producer Pierre Marchand made it in Montreal. McLachlan wrote most of it in a small house close to his studio. In Canada, where she was already known, it was an immediate hit. Elsewhere it grew slowly: in the United States it stayed in the middle of the charts for almost two years.

The album sounds atmospheric and restrained, with soft arrangements and raw, honest lyrics. Critics praised her voice and the depth of the songs. According to an AllMusic reviewer, the record combines Marchand's atmospheric production with her strongest songwriting to date. Rolling Stone wrote that she truly came into her own as an artist here.
