The Indescribable Wow
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Indescribable Wow is Sam Phillips's fifth studio album, and her first for Virgin Records. With it she moved from Christian pop to secular alternative rock. She also used a different name: Sam instead of Leslie. T Bone Burnett produced the record. He also played guitar, mandocello and Marxophone, and Van Dyke Parks wrote the arrangements for one song. Harpsichord, harmonium and cello can also be heard, among other instruments.
The single Holding On to the Earth reached number 22 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks in early 1989. The record was well received. Rolling Stone called Phillips a great talent with a great deal to offer, and AllMusic found the music timeless.
