Rush

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Rush is the debut album of the Canadian band, five years after its formation. It was released on 18 March 1974 in Canada on Moon Records, the group's own label, and came out internationally later that year on Mercury. It is the only record with the first drummer John Rutsey. The band did not think the first recordings, in the summer of 1973, sounded good enough. In November they partly re-recorded the album and remixed it entirely with Terry Brown, and three new songs were added. The sound is direct hard rock on the model of Led Zeppelin and Humble Pie.

Working Man did well on a radio station in Cleveland, where listeners phoned to ask where they could buy the record. That led to an international contract. Billboard heard something of Robert Plant in Geddy Lee's singing. Later critics judged it more severely, because Neil Peart was not yet part of it.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Working Man and notice Geddy Lee's singing, which reminded Billboard of Robert Plant, and the powerful guitar work.
