Caress of Steel
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Caress of Steel is Rush's third studio album and was released on 24 September 1975 on Mercury. The band recorded it in July at Toronto Sound Studios, immediately after the tour for Fly by Night. Guitarist Alex Lifeson, bassist Geddy Lee and drummer Neil Peart felt confident and were proud of the result. They built on the long, conceptual songs of the previous record and moved from bluesy hard rock towards prog rock.
The Necromancer lasts twelve minutes and is influenced by Tolkien. The Fountain of Lamneth fills the second side and was the group's first epic prog rock song. Bastille Day and Lakeside Park remained fixtures of the live set. Even so, the album proved to be a low point. The darker sound and the fantasy stories found little audience, sales stayed low and the tour was nicknamed Down the Tubes. Fans have valued the record more in retrospect.
