Fly by Night

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Fly by Night was released on 14 February 1975 and was Rush's second album. It was the first with drummer Neil Peart, who replaced John Rutsey in the summer of 1974, just before the first North American tour. Peart also became the main lyricist, and his imaginative and philosophical themes differed greatly from the simpler hard rock of the debut. Recording took about five days in Toronto, with Terry Brown as co-producer.

Each song shows a different side of the band. Anthem is named after a novel by Ayn Rand. By-Tor and the Snow Dog lasts eight minutes and consists of eight parts. It tells a battle between good and evil and marked an important point in the group's writing. Rivendell is also fantasy, and Fly by Night is about Peart's move from Canada to London. In the United States the album sold modestly; in Canada it reached number 9.
