2112

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

2112 · After the disappointing sales of Fly by Night and Caress of Steel, Rush was in a bad way in 1976. The money had run out, the tour was called the Down the Tubes Tour by the band itself, and Mercury considered dropping the group. Manager Ray Danniels managed to secure one more album. The label and the manager wanted more commercial music, but the band kept to its progressive course.

The first side is filled entirely by the twenty-minute title piece, a story set in a distant future. The second side consists of shorter songs that show the group's hard rock roots. The record received favourable reviews, soon sold better than the earlier albums and became the first big success. Afterwards the band took full creative control into its own hands.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to 2112: Overture and notice how the twenty-minute title piece opens, as a run-up to a story that fills the whole of the first side.
