Lonely and Blue

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Lonely and Blue is Roy Orbison's debut album and was released in January 1961 on Monument Records, in stereo and mono. After two years at Sun Records he signed with RCA in 1958, but left after two singles. In early 1959 his manager Wesley Rose asked Fred Foster of Monument whether he was interested. He was. The album was recorded at RCA Studio B, with two- and three-track recorders.

The album contains Only the Lonely, Blue Angel and I'm Hurtin', which were already known as singles. There are also covers of, among others, Don Gibson, the Everly Brothers and Johnnie Ray. Come Back to Me (My Love) has almost the same intro as Only the Lonely, because that is where the vocal figure of Only the Lonely comes from. AllMusic praised the powerful vocals and the saxophone solo by Boots Randolph in I'll Say It's My Fault. In Britain the album entered the chart in 1963.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Come Back to Me (My Love) and notice the intro, which sounds almost the same as that of Only the Lonely.
