At the Rock House

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

At the Rock House is Roy Orbison's first album on the label Sun Records and was released in 1961 in mono. By then he had already moved to Monument. Sun owner Sam Phillips had recordings from 1956 to 1958 lying around and seized on the singer's national success, with three big hits in 1960 and 1961, to release them. He wrote most of the songs himself, but the credits went to Phillips. They are in Sun's traditional rockabilly style. Apart from Devil Doll, all the tracks were given additional vocals or instruments afterwards.

Rock House is credited to Orbison and Jenkins. Bruce Eder of AllMusic called the album exciting, but understood why it did not break through at the time: songs like You're Gonna Cry and Problem Child were too intense and too ambitious for the rock and roll audience, with many changes and extended lyrics.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to You're Gonna Cry and notice the many changes within the song, which make it sound more ambitious than ordinary rock and roll.
