Virgo Vibes

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Virgo Vibes, from 1967, is the second album under his own name by the vibraphonist Roy Ayers and was released on Atlantic Records. The record was made in two sessions: on 18 January 1967 at Gold Star Studios in Los Angeles and on 6 March 1967 in New York. As a result two different groups play on it. Trumpeter Charles Tolliver can be heard on both sessions. The tenor saxophone is played by Joe Henderson in New York and by Harold Land in Los Angeles. In The Ringer, Herbie Hancock plays piano, under the pseudonym Ronnie Clark.

The title piece Virgo Vibes lasts almost thirteen minutes and is the longest track. AllMusic called the record one of Ayers's best, made long before he turned to disco and pop, when he was still a promising jazz vibraphonist.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Virgo Vibes and notice how the longest track on the record gives room to the vibraphone and to the soloists.
