Stoned Soul Picnic
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Stoned Soul Picnic is the third studio album by the vibraphonist Roy Ayers. It was released in 1968 on Atlantic Records, with Herbie Mann as producer. Alongside Ayers, the players include Charles Tolliver on trumpet and flugelhorn, Hubert Laws on flute, Gary Bartz on alto saxophone and Herbie Hancock on piano. The bass is played by Ron Carter and Miroslav Vitous, and Grady Tate is on drums.
Striking is the choice of songs by others: Stoned Soul Picnic by Laura Nyro, Wave by Antonio Carlos Jobim and For Once in My Life. Charles Tolliver and Edwin Birdsong supplied Lil's Paradise and What the People Say, and Ayers himself wrote A Rose for Cindy. AllMusic felt that the group lets the groove bubble through nicely and called the record one of his better jazz-oriented works.
