Pearls of Passion

Pearls of Passion · In the early eighties Per Gessle had three number 1 albums with his band Gyllene Tider, but after its break-up in 1984 his solo records flopped. Marie Fredriksson was successful on the same label, EMI Sweden. On the advice of the label's director, Gessle translated the song Svarta glas into English and recorded it as a duet with Fredriksson: Neverending Love. It became Roxette's first single and reached number three in Sweden. The rest of the album was recorded in the summer of 1986.

Pearls of Passion was released on 31 October 1986 in Scandinavia and Canada. In Sweden it was an immediate success: number two on the album chart. Elsewhere the album did not enter the charts. Goodbye to You and Soul Deep reached the Swedish top twenty. AllMusic was critical and found a lot of average dance music, but called Soul Deep, Neverending Love and Secrets That She Keeps strong.
