Gasoline Alley

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Gasoline Alley is Rod Stewart's second solo album and was released on 12 June 1970 on Vertigo Records. It contains covers alongside original compositions. As on many of his solo records of the period, the other members of the Faces make a substantial contribution, including Ronnie Wood, Ronnie Lane, Ian McLagan and Kenney Jones. Stewart produced the record together with Lou Reizner.

The title track later enjoyed a second life: Elkie Brooks had a hit with it in 1983, and Long John Baldry, with whom Stewart had played earlier, recorded it in 1973. The reception was good. Langdon Winner of Rolling Stone felt that Stewart had a feeling for the fragile moments in a human life and called it the work of an exceptionally fine artist.

Listening tip. In Country Comfort, listen to the piano and the backing vocals and notice the relaxed mood of the song.
