An Old Raincoat Won’t Ever Let You Down

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

An Old Raincoat Won’t Ever Let You Down · An Old Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down is Rod Stewart's solo debut. In the United States it was released in November 1969 under the title The Rod Stewart Album; in the United Kingdom the revised title followed in February 1970. His later Faces colleagues Ronnie Wood and Ian McLagan play on it, alongside, among others, Keith Emerson, drummer Micky Waller and guitarists Martin Pugh and Martin Quittenton.

The album combines versions of other people's work, such as Street Fighting Man, Man of Constant Sorrow and Dirty Old Town, with original pieces. On Handbags & Gladrags, Mike d'Abo plays piano. Fusion, Rolling Stone and Robert Christgau were positive. Rolling Stone saw Stewart as a highly individual interpreter of other people's songs who could be disarmingly vulnerable in his own work.

Listening

Listening tip. In Man of Constant Sorrow, listen to the voice and the guitar, and notice how Stewart bends a familiar song to his will.
