Canvas

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Canvas was the first album by pianist and composer Robert Glasper on a major label, Blue Note. He plays in a trio with bassist Vicente Archer and drummer Damion Reid. Saxophonist Mark Turner can be heard on two tracks, singer Bilal on two others. Almost all the songs are by the pianist himself; Riot is by Herbie Hancock. Eli Wolf was the producer.

Critics heard the tradition of Tyner, Hancock and Jarrett: rich in harmony and melody. They also heard a sound of his own in the making, with jazz lines, neo-soul turns and a touch of hip hop rhythm. JazzTimes praised above all Riot, in which a small piece of Hancock's melody serves as a five-bar loop for solos. Another reviewer found the album too uniform.

Listening

Listening tip. In Riot, listen to the short melodic fragment that returns as a loop, and to what the soloists play on top of it.
