Sentimental Journey
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Sentimental Journey is Ringo Starr's solo debut, released in March 1970 on Apple Records while the Beatles were falling apart. It is a collection of old pre-rock 'n' roll standards that he knew from his youth in Liverpool. He began recording in October 1969, after John Lennon had said privately that he was leaving the band. George Martin produced and each song was given a different arranger, including Paul McCartney, Klaus Voormann, Maurice Gibb, Quincy Jones and Elmer Bernstein. The cover shows him in front of a pub in the Liverpool district of Dingle.
The reactions were mixed and many Beatles fans were confused. Even so, the record reached the top ten in the United Kingdom. Later it was seen as a forerunner of standards records by, among others, Harry Nilsson and Linda Ronstadt.
